First of all, thank you for looking at our website and I hope you find all of the information you need to assist you with your quest for good quality zebu cattle. I will warn you...these little guys are like potato chips - you will start with 1 or 2 and before you know it....5 more, then 3 more, etc, etc ...and one day you will wake up and have 60.
About
5 years or so, we where at the same crossroads you are - looking for the
"perfect" small farm animal. Since we were relatively new at the "farming"
idea...we needed something "idiot" proof. The only thing we
really knew was...we did not want goats and we knew we could not want to handle
1,800lbs. So we started looking at the smaller, "miniature" breeds of
livestock.
As we began our research, we kept focused on the word "miniature" and the idea that once humans begin to "breeding down" anything; whether its dogs, horses or cows... you start having potential issues; therefore, not "idiot" proof!
In short, although many of your resources will site the Dexter as being the smallest breed of cattle, in fact the Zebu is the only true "naturally" small breed and considered one of the oldest breeds of cattle.
We firmly believe in registered cattle as a means of documenting and advancing the breed. By registering your animals, you have a history of the "how", "what", "where" and "when."
Chris and I, have purchased stock from all over the country and have only registered those animals that meet the highest standards as outlined in the AMZA breed standards. This includes my own offspring. Example, I believe your bull is the most important animal your herd, therefore, if a bull is not better than his parents, we will steer (castrate) them.
Even though much of our stock are dual registered with the American Miniature Zebu Associations as well as the International Miniature Zebu Association, we only use the American Miniature Zebu Association for our current animals.
Particularly for new comers to the breed, purchasing your animals from a reputable AMZA breeder that is selling AMZA registered stock will give you a peace of mind. AMZA and its members works extremely hard to educate the prospective buyer in fitting the right animal(s) to the right person or situation.
At the CSR, we offer the highest level support before, during and after the purchase. We love to sit and talk Zebus. Even if we don't have the right animal, we will assist you in looking for something that will.
Thank you for looking at our website and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call.
Bernie and Chris Keasler.
